Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICSI is an innovative technique performed at our IRIS infertility centre, which is one of the best IVF centre in Mumbai. It is a segment of the IVF process which involves direct injection of a single sperm into the egg cytoplasm. It is applied in cases wherein the sperm cannot penetrate the outer layer to the inside of the egg due to a variety of reasons. So, this may become an obstacle in the fertilization process.
Steps involved in the ICSI process
Step I: Ovarian Stimulation
In the stimulation step of an ICSI cycle, injectable medications are administered for 8-14days to stimulate the ovaries for production of eggs. Injectable also helps in development and maturation of eggs.
Step II: Egg Retrieval
The egg retrieval is a minor procedure lasts for about 20-30 minutes. With the help of hollow needle mature eggs are recovered under anaesthesia to reduce discomfort or pain.
Step III: Fertilization
Under a high-power microscope of 400X, a mature sperm is injected into each mature egg to achieve fertilization.
Step IV: Embryo Development
Embryo starts developing after fertilization. These embryos are placed within the Embryoscopes to enable complete development without disturbing the embryos.
Step V: Embryo Transfer
The embryo transfer is a simple and final step of the ICSI cycle. With the help of a catheter the embryo is transferred into the uterus without anaesthesia. After two -three weeks of embryo transfer, pregnancy test is performed.
